Since 9/11, building evacuation has taken on an entirely new level of importance. Today, photoluminescent (PL) safety systems that perform in low light and blackout conditions are vital to meeting both the concerns of building tenants and new legal requirements beginning to sprout up in different jurisdictions around the country.

.Most facilities lack sufficient emergency lighting, even though they may meet local fire codes. Lighted EXIT signs located near ceiling level are often obscured by smoke when a fire occurs. Imperfect maintenance of electrical emergency lights combined with inadequate oversight can cause existing egress systems to operate at less than 100% reliability. Making matters worse, electrical systems (both primary and backup) can fail during an emergency from direct fire damage, abnormal heat conditions, and water damage. And in the case of even a small, smoky fire, substantial smoke accumulation forces people to the floor, further limiting the effectiveness of whatever overhead emergency lighting may still remain functional.

The frequent failures of installed, battery-operated lighting, inadequate illumination, and the accumulation of smoke all make it harder for people to evacuate a building. The resulting confusion, disorientation, and panic can cost lives and waste precious minutes, and in an emergency situation, minutes count.

The proactive solution to this problem is installing affordable PL products as an autonomous complement to existing emergency lighting systems that help people get out safely and quickly. .

Fortunately, PL products can be easily incorporated into new and existing buildings. Products and installations, such as those offered by AfterGlow® Federal, can be tailored to situational needs such as budget and aesthetic concerns as well as quirks in building construction. They can be readily retro-fitted, installed incrementally, and can provide the most "bang" for the safety improvement buck. Additionally, over the life of the building, PL systems cost less than electric alternatives in terms of acquisition and lifecycle maintenance costs.
