Since 9/11, building evacuation has taken on an entirely new level of importance. Today, photoluminescent (PL) safety systems that perform in low light and blackout conditions are vital to meeting both the concerns of building tenants and new legal requirements beginning to sprout up in different jurisdictions around the country.
Most facilities lack sufficient emergency lighting, even though they may meet local fire codes. Lighted EXIT signs located near ceiling level are often obscured by smoke when a fire occurs. The frequent failures of installed, battery-operated lighting, inadequate illumination, and the accumulation of smoke all make it harder for people to evacuate a building. The resulting confusion, disorientation, and panic can cost lives and waste precious minutes, and in an emergency situation, minutes count.
