Management
Richard Martin
President and CEO, Defense Holdings, Inc.
In May 1994, Mr. Martin founded Defense Holdings, Inc., a small business dedicated to the creation, management and transition of high technology projects. Serving as the company's President, Mr. Martin and his highly experienced staff assist in the management of complex programs that provide advanced technologies to facilitate the critical missions assigned to the Department of Defense and other federal agencies. Defense Holdings has also developed close working relationships with the University of Virginia and federal laboratories to enhance the rapid transition of advanced technologies.
One area of specialization for Defense Holdings is the development of photoluminescent technologies and applications. After the company was selected to install high performance photo-luminescent materials for emergency egress systems in the Pentagon's Renovation and Restoration Project—the largest project of its kinds covering 6.5 million square feet—Mr. Martin created AfterGlow® to bring this expertise to the commercial sector.
Prior to founding Defense Holdings, Mr. Martin served in the United States Navy for more than 20 years. He served onboard three nuclear strategic ballistic missile submarines in both enlisted and commissioned assignments and worked as the Lead Project Engineer in the Navy's Submarine Hydrodynamics Branch and the Deputy Ship Design Manager for the SEAWOLF class submarine. As a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Program Manager, Mr. Martin managed a wide array of advanced technology and prototype programs. In this role, he interacted on daily basis with leading research institutions across the United States and fostered applications of new technologies.
